4 tips to nail your job interview

This is Part 2 of our blog series that will help young professionals and recent college grads nail their job interviews. Yesterday, we looked at how to prepare for your job interview. Today, we’ll dive into what you need to do during the interview. I spoke with Michele Dye, founder of Dyenamic Career Goals to share 4 critical tips to ensure that you have a successful interview.

1.   Dress to impress

It is important to come to your interview professionally dressed. For ladies, a pantsuit or skirt-suit are favorable options. For men, a suit, shirt, and tie is the best way to go.

Avoid short and revealing clothing as well as distracting accessories to ensure the focus is on the interview rather than your appearance.

Dressing appropriately is a sign of respect, both for yourself and the company who is interviewing you.

2.   Make eye contact and listen

Making eye contact is also a form of respect, as well as actively listening to your interviewer. You should engage in the conversation and pay close attention to what your interviewer is asking in order to best answer their questions.

3.   Take notes

Don’t be afraid to take notes. Write anything down that will help you make a decision about the job as well as any additional information about the company.

While your interviewer is speaking, you can also jot down some follow up questions, which leads us into our next tip.

4.   Ask questions

An interview should not be a one-sided conversation. Try to come prepared with questions for your interviewer.

It is important for you to understand the position you are applying for and get to know the company as well. This will help you make a decision if you are presented with an offer.

Bonus tip: Avoid asking about salary, benefits, etc. until you have been offered the position.
